Book Reviews

Not feeling comfortable to promote the book in church gatherings, I've decided it might be okay to share with you a few of the blessings that have come my way through others who have read the book, In Search of Heaven on Earth in Kentucky. Perhaps these comments will be an encouragement to others thinking about acquiring the book. They have certainly been an encouragement to me in sensing the response to the book!

"Everyone interested in the Christian Church in Kentucky would benefit from reading this book and be inspired by the record of God's movement in the state over the last couple of hundred years.  In Search of Heaven on Earth in Kentucky is an excellent written and pictorial record of what the Lord has done in the Christian Church movement and in the hearts of His believers."

Bob Russell, (former) Senior Minister of Southeast Christian Church in Louisville

"[In Search of Heaven on Earth in Kentucky] is maybe the most important book for the Kentucky churches that I have seen in my lifetime."

Bill Welker, (former) Senior Minister of Rice Station Christian Church in Louisville

"The writing of In Search of Heaven on Earth in Kentucky has been a labor of love . . . When you search the  contents of this monumental effort keep in mind that this represents an investment of 7 years, 20,000 miles and a lot of film.  Why would a person make the necessary sacrifices for this effort?  It is published in the hope that some will be more excited and proud of their heritage and others will be attracted to the congregations featured in these pages.  This is a masterpiece . . . to glorify God and to encourage readers to find heaven on earth in those pictured buildings. [The author] did, I did too!"

Wayne B. Smith, Retired Minister of Southland Christian Church in Lexington where he served 40 years

"Years ago the ancient Chinese had a slogan: A picture is worth a thousand words. That is one way to describe an awesome publication prepared by John E. Cornett . . .  he has covered our Commonwealth and pictured near 500 buildings where Christian church members worship on the Lord’s day. The pictures are amazingly beautiful and each one is identified. When you stroll memory lane, you will rejoice to see the picture of your home church. I have gone through the book. My eyes got misty and my heart overflowed with precious memories as I viewed the building of the Christian church in Dunnville, KY. I could picture my Father in the pulpit and Mother playing the piano. Thank God Christians have provided houses, dedicated to God, where they can sing, pray, preach, observe the Lord’s supper and baptize. Many funerals and wedding are held in our church buildings.

This large book will be treasured until you die. You’ll visit it many times. Thank God for the church – let’s keep building! Ephesians 1:2-3"

                        L. Palmer Young, Chancellor, Kentucky Christian College

"The beautiful coffee table edition documents nearly 500 congregations throughout the state. As I leafed through the book I was captivated by the scenic beauty of the hundreds of church buildings it documents. I read with interest the historical notes and anecdotes that accompanied the listings."

"It's tempting to reference the 'picture worth a thousand words' cliché when discussing John Cornett's new book, but it's not necessary."

"…a phenomenal book…Through Cornett's contribution I have been enriched by recognizing the work of God shown in the photographs of the Kentucky churches. I have also been further educated by reviewing the principles of the Restoration Movement that are rehearsed in several stimulating articles accompanying the church profiles."

"Every church building has been frozen in time, its distinctive features captured in creative black-and-white images as artistic as mini oil paintings."

"…each photo bears witness to not only his love of photography, but his love of the church, not just the buildings, but the people and the beliefs housed in the buildings."

"I can hardly find the words to express how impressed I was as I turned through the pages…The pictures were pleasant illustrations, but [the] congregational histories give them life…Your love and respect for those who have given their lives to the Lord and the principles of the Restoration Movement come through loud and clear both in the way you write about them and in the quality of the paper on which the words are printed. The book is excellent in every way…"
